The Airport Art + Technology Artworks

The Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC) is one of the regionís most significant connections to a global community that views Silicon Valley, and specifically San Jose, as a leader in technology innovation. Through the tools and technologies developed in this region, public art will provide a portal to this community.

Travel through San Joseís new airport and discover public artworks that create an immediate sense of Silicon Valley. These installations are part of a program of Art + Technology, showcasing the diversity, creativity and dynamism of this region.

Some of the artworks at the airport will be permanently on display. Others will be shown for several years and replaced with new works that align with the Art + Technology theme.

Please note: artworks located in the Concourse and Jetways are available only to ticketed passengers.

The program was implemented in three phases: the master plan (completed 2004), development of the art activation program (completed 2006), and artwork commissioning and development.

The SJC Public Art Master Plan
The SJC Public Art Program started in the early years of the millennium as part of the airport capital improvement program with the development of the Airport Public Art Master Plan that outlines a framework for a program of Art + Technology.

Activation Plan
In 2006, the team of Gorbet + Banerjee (Matt and Susan LK Gorbet + Banny Banerjee) developed an Activation Plan for the airport public art program that defines a series of platforms for artwork throughout the airport. Platforms are defined by location, data and power provisions, equipment space, and physical attachments. Artists are given the unique opportunity to work with these platforms in designing their artworks.

Supporting research report and schematic strategy documents for the Art + Technology Programís Art Activation are available under Plans & Documents.
